The 2018 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® is Oct. 6 through Oct. 14. Keeping you and your family safe will help ensure an enjoyable experience.

Here are some safety tips that may help you and your family prepare for this wonderful event.

Be Prepared for Albuquerque Weather

  • Dress in layers: Mornings may be cool and then temperatures may warm up throughout the day.
  • Wear sunscreen: The high altitude puts you at increased risk for sunburn.
  • Wear eye protection: Protect those beautiful eyes from the sun and wind.

Nutrition Counts

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help avoid dehydration.
  • Make healthy food choices. Although sweets may be tempting, be sure to have some protein throughout the day.

Lost and All Alone?

  • Make an emergency plan. Decide where your group will meet in case of an emergency or if you get separated. Be sure children carry some form of identification.
  • Bring a flashlight and/or be sure your phone is charged so you can use the flashlight because finding your car in the dark may be a challenge.
  • Be sure to bring any emergency medicines you or your family may need, such as rescue inhalers. And carry them on you instead of in a bag or backpack.

In a Jam?

  • This wonderful event brings long lines of traffic, so be sure to know where you are going and follow all traffic signs and law enforcement directions.
  • Watch the road and avoid looking up at the balloons while you are behind the wheel!
  • Be patient. Think ahead about simple games to entertain children like “I spy,” or bring calming CDs to play while waiting in traffic.

NO SMOKING on the Balloon Fiesta Field

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Inc., says, “Don’t smoke anywhere on the field! A lit cigarette could possibly ignite a balloon’s tank, and an ash can melt the balloon envelope. Also, pockets of propane can settle in areas around the field. This odorless gas can easily ignite.”

Have fun, be safe and enjoy this amazing New Mexican tradition! For more information, visit the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta website.
